Shopping Addiction

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Shopping addiction is characterized by an eagerness to purchase unnecessary or superfluous items and a lack of impulse control around shopping; it is a concept similar to compulsive buying disorder, also called oniomania, but is usually viewed from a more psychosocial perspective, or as a drug-free addiction comparable to gambling, internet or video game addiction, amid ongoing debate over whether such less-recognized impulsive behaviors can be conceptualized as addictions.
