Ergophobia

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Ergophobia, also called ergasiophobia or ponophobia, is an extreme and debilitating fear associated with work, whether manual or non-manual labor, a fear of finding or losing employment, or a fear of specific workplace tasks. The term comes from the Greek ergon, work, and phobos, fear. Ergophobia is not specifically defined in the DSM-5, where it can be accounted for under the category of other specific phobia. Its features often overlap with social phobia or performance anxiety, including a fear of failing at assigned tasks, public speaking at work, socializing with co-workers, or emotional, psychological or physical injury on the job.
