Karoshi, Japanese for overwork death, is a Japanese term for occupation-related sudden death, most commonly caused by heart attacks and strokes brought on by stress and malnourishment or fasting. Workplace mental stress can also drive workers to suicide, a related phenomenon known as karojisatsu. Karoshi is also widespread elsewhere in Asia, and death from overwork occurs worldwide; more than 770 wage laborers die of overwork annually even in Sweden, a country with strong labor regulations.
