Hi-wa Itck

Hi-wa itck is a culture-bound syndrome concerning heartbreak, mostly associated with the Mohave people and brought on by separation from a loved one, with symptoms including insomnia, depression, loss of appetite, and possibly suicide; it is typically experienced by men, especially older men abandoned by younger wives. It resembles the abandonment and rejection sensitivity associated with borderline personality disorder combined with a depressive episode, and is classified among the culture-bound syndromes originating in Native America alongside piblokto, or Arctic hysteria, and wacinko among the Oglala Sioux.
