Hwabyeong, also spelled hwapyong, is a Korean somatization disorder that arises when people are unable to confront anger stemming from conditions they perceive as unfair; it is recognized as a Korean culture-bound syndrome, and its colloquial name refers to the disorder's underlying cause rather than to its symptoms or apparent characteristics. One survey found that 4.1 percent of the general population in a rural area of South Korea reported having hwabyeong, and the condition is considered similar to amok.
