Video game addiction, also known as gaming disorder or internet gaming disorder, is generally defined as a behavioral addiction involving problematic, compulsive video game use that significantly impairs a person's ability to function in various life domains over a prolonged period, diagnosable when gaming activity comes at the cost of daily responsibilities or other interests despite negative consequences; the World Health Organization included gaming disorder in the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases, with its main criterion a lack of self-control over gaming, while the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5 found insufficient evidence to officially recognize internet gaming disorder but included it among conditions for further study. The concept has generated considerable research, debate and controversy among medical, scientific and gaming communities, including disagreement over whether it is a separate clinical entity or a manifestation of underlying psychiatric disorders, with no universally standardized definition.
