Toxic Positivity

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Toxic positivity, also called excessive positivity or positive toxicity, is dysfunctional emotional management that does not fully acknowledge negative emotions, particularly anger and sadness. Socially, it is the act of dismissing another person's negative emotions by suggesting a positive emotion in their place, and while the enforcement of positive thinking is beneficial in restricted situations, in many others it worsens a person's ability to deal effectively with negative outcomes, with the resulting toxicity capable of contributing to physical illness such as cardiovascular disease.
