A flashback, or involuntary recurrent memory, is a psychological phenomenon in which a person suddenly and often powerfully re-experiences a past experience or elements of one, an experience that can carry any emotion from fear to happiness to sadness or excitement. The term is used particularly when the memory returns involuntarily, especially when it is intense enough that the person relives the experience and is unable to fully recognize it as a memory of the past rather than something happening in real time.
