Asomatognosia

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Asomatognosia, also called somatoagnosia, is a neurological condition in which a person loses the ability to recognize or acknowledge one or more of their own body parts, either verbally denying that a limb belongs to them or simply neglecting it; some patients instead believe the limb belongs to someone else, a related condition called somatoparaphrenia. Even when the affected body part is pointed out to them, the correction is usually only temporary before the denial returns. The condition typically follows damage to the right parietal lobe, most often from a stroke, and commonly occurs alongside hemispatial neglect of the left side of space, so that patients fail to recognize the limbs on the left side of their own body as their own.
