A fixed mindset is the belief that one's intelligence, talent and other basic qualities are fixed traits that cannot be meaningfully developed through effort. The concept was introduced by psychologist Carol Dweck, whose research found that people holding this belief tend to avoid challenges, give up more easily in the face of setbacks, and see effort as fruitless, because struggle threatens their sense of being naturally talented. It is contrasted with a growth mindset, the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
