Grit (Personality Trait)

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Grit is a personality trait defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, combining sustained effort and interest toward objectives that may take years to achieve despite obstacles and setbacks. The concept was developed by psychologist Angela Duckworth, whose research proposed that grit predicts achievement in demanding pursuits somewhat independently of measured talent. It is typically assessed using a self-report scale asking about consistency of interests and perseverance of effort over time.
