Ego Depletion

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Ego depletion is the idea that self-control or willpower draws upon a limited pool of conscious mental resources that can be taxed to exhaustion when used constantly with no reprieve. Once these resources are depleted, a person's capacity for further self-control is said to be reduced until the resource has had a chance to recover; the concept has also been a prominent subject of psychology's replication crisis, with later studies disputing how reliably the original depletion effect reproduces, a debate this atlas records as unresolved rather than settled.
