Fear of mice and rats is one of the most common specific phobias, sometimes called musophobia, murophobia or suriphobia. As an unreasonable and disproportionate fear it is distinct from a reasonable concern about rats and mice contaminating food supplies, a concern that may potentially be universal wherever stored grain attracts rodents that then consume or contaminate it.
