Apotemnophobia is the fear of amputation, covering both a fear of losing one's own limb and a fear of encountering people who have had a limb amputated. It is classified as a specific phobia and can produce significant anxiety around medical settings, injury or the sight of an amputee. The term is sometimes confused with an unrelated condition in which a person desires the amputation of a healthy limb, a distinct phenomenon now generally described separately as body integrity dysphoria.
