Teratophobia is the fear of monsters or of deformity, historically applied both to an intense dread of encountering a person with a visible birth defect or disfigurement and to fictional monstrous figures. It reflects an older link in clinical literature between fear responses and unfamiliar or atypical physical appearance, a link now approached more critically for the stigma it can reflect and reinforce.
