Hypnophobia

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Hypnophobia, also known as somniphobia or clinophobia, is the fear of going to sleep even when tired, sitting at the crossover of generalized anxiety, insomnia and specific phobia. People with the condition often fear what might happen while they are asleep, including nightmares, sleep paralysis, night terrors, wetting the bed, or, in some sufferers, an association between sleep and death, and the fear is often rooted more broadly in feelings of vulnerability and loss of control. Left untreated, the resulting loss of sleep can lead to lasting psychological and physical difficulties.
