Gamophobia is the fear of marriage or of long-term romantic commitment, producing anxiety at the prospect of a formal or permanent partnership even when a person is otherwise willing to be in a relationship. It can stem from a fear of losing independence, from having witnessed a difficult marriage, or from a broader fear of commitment, and is distinguished from simple reluctance to marry by the degree of anxiety involved.
