Galeophobia, or selachophobia, is the medical term for a fear of sharks, a name derived from the Greek galeos, shark, and phobia, fear. The condition, diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria, is characterized by marked fear or anxiety about sharks severe enough to impair a sufferer's quality of life, and a 2015 study found just over half of Americans surveyed, 51 percent, reported being absolutely terrified of sharks.
