Echolalia is the repetition of vocalizations made by another person; when a person repeats their own words this way it is instead called palilalia. In its most pronounced form the repetition is automatic and effortless. It is one of the echophenomena, closely related to echopraxia, the automatic repetition of another persons movements, and both are described as imitative behavior carried out without explicit awareness. Echolalia can occur as an immediate reaction to a stimulus or after a delay.
