Parallel Play

Parallel play is a stage of early childhood social play, typically observed in toddlers around two to three years old, in which two or more children play near one another, often using similar toys or engaging in similar activities, but without directly interacting, cooperating, or coordinating their play with each other, each child instead remaining absorbed in their own separate activity. The American researcher Mildred Parten identified and named the stage as part of a broader six-category typology of children's social participation during play, published following her observational research in 1932, which also included unoccupied behavior, solitary play, onlooker behavior, associative play, and cooperative play, arranged roughly in order of increasing social engagement and coordination with peers. Parten proposed that parallel play represents an important transitional stage in social development, positioned between the more socially isolated forms of play typical of very young toddlers and the more genuinely interactive, cooperative forms of play that emerge later in the preschool years as children develop stronger language, turn-taking, and social-negotiation skills. Although parallel play was originally framed within a developmental progression that children move through and eventually leave behind, later researchers have noted that children of all ages continue to engage in parallel play alongside more advanced forms of social play depending on the specific social context, the activity involved, and their own individual temperament, so that its presence in an older child is not automatically taken as a sign of developmental delay in the way early researchers sometimes assumed.
