Emerging Adulthood

Developmental Phenomena

Emerging adulthood, also called early adulthood or post-adolescence, is a developmental stage between late adolescence and settled adulthood first proposed by the psychologist Jeffrey Arnett in a 2000 article in American Psychologist. Arnett places the stage at roughly ages eighteen to twenty-nine, describing young people, chiefly in developed countries, who have not yet taken on children, independent housing or an income sufficient for full autonomy, and who use the period to gain independence and explore different possibilities for their adult lives before settling into the more fixed roles of adolescence on one side or young adulthood on the other.
