Bias Blind Spot

Overconfidence and Self-Assessment Biases

The bias blind spot is the tendency for people to recognize the influence of cognitive and motivational biases on the judgment of other people while failing to recognize the influence of the same biases on their own judgment. The term was coined by the psychologist Emily Pronin and colleagues in a 2002 paper, which found that people rated themselves as less susceptible to a range of common biases than the average person, even while readily identifying those same biases in others. The effect is considered a metabias, a bias about biases, and it has been shown to be resistant to simple debiasing instructions, since being told about the bias blind spot does not reliably reduce a person's own tendency to exhibit it.
