Precision bias is a form of cognitive bias in which an evaluator of information commits a logical fallacy as a result of confusing accuracy and precision, weighting precise-sounding information more heavily in a decision regardless of whether it is actually accurate. The phenomenon has been documented in negotiation, legal and medical contexts, where an advisor sometimes offers unnecessarily precise figures that create a false sense of confidence in the person receiving them.
