In psychoanalytic theory, fantasy refers to mental experiences shaped by imagination, typically scenarios that are impossible or unlikely to happen, through which a person expresses certain desires in vivid mental imagery. Sigmund Freud treated fantasy as a way of achieving in imagination the wish fulfillment that reality denies, writing that an energetic person can succeed by turning wishful fantasies into reality rather than simply escaping into them. Melanie Klein extended the concept with unconscious phantasy, spelled with a ph, describing an ongoing inner world of imagined relationships that can carry violent or aggressive content, and Jacques Lacan described fantasy as a screen that conceals deeper unconscious material. Later research has also linked a well-developed fantasy life to empathy and creativity, particularly among people in artistic and literary pursuits.
