Postponement of Affect

Psychoanalytic Defense Mechanisms

Postponement of affect is a defense mechanism in which a person delays their emotional response to an event, consciously or unconsciously putting off the feelings that event would normally provoke until a later, often safer, moment. It is distinct from suppression's deliberate postponement of a thought, focusing instead specifically on delaying the emotional reaction itself rather than the topic that triggers it.
