Ichthyophobia, or fear of fish, ranges from a cultural aversion to eating or handling fish to a genuine specific phobia, and can involve discomfort with eating fish, touching raw fish, or encountering dead fish. Psychologists classify it as an unusual specific phobia, sharing common symptoms and treatments with other phobic disorders. A related but distinct fear specifically of sharks is called selachophobia or galeophobia. Treatment documented in the psychological literature includes graduated exposure therapy, in which a person is gradually desensitized to fish in a controlled setting, as well as more intensive radical exposure approaches. The name comes from the Greek ichthys, fish, and phobos, fear.
