Necrophobia is a specific phobia, the irrational fear of dead organisms such as corpses as well as things associated with death such as coffins, tombstones, funerals and cemeteries; in a cultural sense the term can also describe a cultural group's fear of the dead, such as a belief that the spirits of the dead will return to haunt the living. The word comes from the Greek nekros, corpse, and phobos, fear, and the sufferer may experience the fear constantly or only when triggered by something such as a close encounter with a dead animal or the funeral of a loved one.
