The speech-to-song illusion is an auditory illusion discovered by psychologist Diana Deutsch in 1995. When an ordinary spoken phrase is played back and repeated several times with no alteration and no added context, listeners perceive the phrase transforming perceptually from ordinary speech into song. The illusion is most reliably reported for non-tonal languages such as English and German, though it can also occur with tonal languages such as Thai and Mandarin.
