Surrogation

Decision-Making and Judgment Biases

Surrogation is a psychological phenomenon in which a measure of some underlying construct gradually comes to replace the construct itself in a person's thinking. It has been studied especially in management and business settings, where a manager tasked with pursuing a strategic goal can lose sight of that goal and begin acting as though the measurement used to track it is the goal itself, such as a manager who comes to treat a customer satisfaction survey score as though it were customer satisfaction.
