Identification with the Aggressor

Psychoanalytic Defense Mechanisms

Identification with the aggressor is a defense mechanism described within psychoanalysis, in which a person facing psychological trauma copes with the impossible choice of being either a victim or an abuser by taking on the role, functional traits, and aggressive or behavioral style of the aggressor rather than remaining only a victim. It has also been described as a way of coping with mental distress more broadly, and in some accounts as a particular instance of a zero-sum interaction between two parties.
