Boreout, or boredom boreout syndrome, is a psychological disorder that causes physical illness, brought on mainly by mental underload at work due to a lack of adequate quantitative or qualitative workload, sometimes because the job description a person was hired under does not match the work they actually do. The syndrome was given its current name in 2007 in the book Diagnose Boreout by the Swiss business consultants Peter Werder and Philippe Rothlin, though the same pattern had earlier been described in 1991 by the American teacher Barry A. Farber under the name underchallenged burnout.
