Randolph Martin Nesse is an American physician and scientist recognized as a founder of the fields of evolutionary medicine and evolutionary psychiatry. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 2013 before moving to Arizona State University, where he founded the Center for Evolution and Medicine. With George C. Williams he co-authored Why We Get Sick, which helped launch the field of evolutionary medicine, and his research examines how natural selection shapes the mechanisms that regulate pain, fever, anxiety and low mood, work he extended in Good Reasons for Bad Feelings, applying evolutionary principles to mental disorders.
