Alexei Leontev was a Soviet Russian developmental psychologist and philosopher, a founder of activity theory, which holds that human consciousness and mental processes develop through purposeful, object-directed activity carried out within a social and cultural setting. He worked within the tradition built by Lev Vygotsky and, alongside Sergei Rubinstein, helped establish activity theory as a distinct approach within Soviet and later international psychology.
