Paul Ekman is a psychologist who began research on facial expression and body movement in 1954 and received his doctorate in clinical psychology at Adelphi University in 1958. His 1967 and 1968 fieldwork with the isolated Fore people of Papua New Guinea gave the strongest evidence to date that certain facial expressions are universal, and his study of patients who hid their feelings revealed micro expressions. From 1971 to 2004 he was a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and with W. Friesen he developed the Facial Action Coding System, published in 1978, a comprehensive tool for objectively measuring facial movement.
