Filter Bubble

Social Biases and Group Effects

A filter bubble is a state of intellectual isolation that can result when algorithms used by search engines and social media platforms personalize the content shown to a user based on their past behavior, so the user is increasingly shown information that matches views and interests they have already expressed. The term was coined by internet activist Eli Pariser, who argued that this automated curation narrows the range of perspectives and information a person encounters without their awareness or consent. It is distinguished from an echo chamber by its algorithmic rather than social origin, though both narrow exposure to opposing views.
