The amity-enmity complex is a theory introduced by Sir Arthur Keith in his 1948 book A New Theory of Human Evolution. Keith proposed that humans evolved as distinct races, tribes and cultures displaying patriotism, morality, leadership and nationalism, so that those who belong to one's own group form an in-group to be tolerated while all others form an out-group subject to hostility. He argued that human conscience evolved a duality, one code to protect and aid friends and another to hate and fight enemies, and his work drew on earlier writing about human tribalism by Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace and Herbert Spencer.
