Collective Narcissism

Social Biases and Group Effects

In social psychology, collective narcissism, also called group narcissism, is the tendency to exaggerate the positive image and importance of a group to which one belongs. While the classic definition of narcissism concerns the individual, collective narcissism extends the concept to an excessively high opinion of one's own social group, treating the group itself as able to function as a narcissistic entity. It is related to but distinct from ethnocentrism: where ethnocentrism asserts the in-group's supremacy at an ethnic or cultural level, collective narcissism is a self-defensive investment of unfulfilled self-entitlement into a belief in the in-group's uniqueness and greatness, and can apply to any type of in-group. Collective narcissism is associated with intergroup hostility.
