Echo Chamber (Media)

Social Biases and Group Effects

An echo chamber is an environment, often created by social media and personalized news feeds, in which a person is repeatedly exposed to opinions and information that reinforce their own existing views while dissenting perspectives are excluded or drowned out. The concept draws on the psychological tendency toward selective exposure, the preference for information that confirms prior beliefs, and on the tendency of like-minded people to cluster together and reinforce one another's positions. Researchers distinguish it from a filter bubble, which results from automated algorithmic curation rather than a person's own social choices, though the two often reinforce each other in practice.
