Sport and Exercise Psychology

Groups the studies whose central finding concerns how physical performance in athletic or competitive tasks is shaped by psychological factors such as the presence of others, motivation or arousal. Belongs here: Triplett's Cycling Experiments, drawn from an analysis of competitive bicycle racing and a matched laboratory task, generally credited as the first published experiment in social psychology and the founding demonstration of social facilitation. A study of group performance or motivation outside a sporting or physical-performance context is filed under social psychology or another branch instead.
