White Racial Identity Development

Counseling Psychology

White Racial Identity Development is a field of research examining how a white person's racial identity develops and affects them across their life, a process through which white people become more aware of their role in American society and of the power and privilege they hold through systemic racism. The psychologist Janet Helms created the White Racial Identity Model in 1992 to provide a way to categorize white racial identity, and a separate framework, White Racial Consciousness Theory, was later developed as an alternative to Helms's model.
