John Stacy Adams was a workplace and behavioral psychologist who developed equity theory in the 1960s. The theory holds that employees compare the ratio of their own contributions and rewards on the job against the same ratio for others, and that perceived unfairness in that comparison motivates people to act to restore a sense of balance; the theory has since been applied both within organizations and in wider social contexts.
