Biosocial theory is a theory in behavioral and social science that describes personality disorders and mental illnesses and disabilities as biologically determined personality traits reacting to environmental stimuli. The same name is also used for a related account of how gender differences arise: biosocial theory in motivational psychology identifies differences between males and females in physical strength and reproductive capacity, and examines how those differences interact with a society's expectations about social roles, an interaction the theory holds produces the gender differences observed in behavior.
