Theory of Planned Behavior

Social Psychology

The theory of planned behavior is a psychological theory that links beliefs to behavior, holding that three core components, attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, together shape an individual's behavioral intentions, with behavioral intention the most proximal determinant of human social behavior. Icek Ajzen elaborated the theory to improve on the predictive power of the earlier theory of reasoned action, adding perceived behavioral control as a component the earlier theory lacked. It has since been applied to studies of beliefs, attitudes, behavioral intentions and behaviors across domains including advertising, public relations, healthcare, sport management, consumer and household finance, and sustainability.
