Relational models theory is a theory of interpersonal relationships authored by the anthropologist Alan Fiske and developed initially from his fieldwork in Burkina Faso. It proposes that all human social interaction can be described using just four elementary relational models, communal sharing, authority ranking, equality matching and market pricing, to which are added the limiting cases of asocial and null interaction where people coordinate with no shared principle at all. The theory has gone on to influence Jonathan Haidt's moral foundations theory and Steven Pinker's theory of indirect speech.
