Anthropophobia is an older clinical term for a pervasive fear of people or of human society in general, extending beyond fear of any one social situation to a broader dread of human contact. It differs from ordinary shyness in the intensity and persistence of the fear, and from social anxiety in its focus on people as such rather than on being evaluated by others. The term predates the modern classification of social anxiety and is used less often in clinical practice today.
