Dermatitis artefacta, also known as factitious dermatitis, is a form of factitious disorder in which a patient intentionally feigns symptoms and produces signs of disease in an attempt to assume the patient role, manifesting as self-inflicted skin damage most commonly caused by prolonged deliberate scratching, though sometimes by sharp instruments or another means.
