Pro-Ana

Pro-ana, short for the promotion of anorexia, refers to the promotion of behaviors related to the eating disorder anorexia nervosa; the related and less-used term pro-mia refers to bulimia nervosa in the same way. Pro-ana groups differ widely in stance, with most describing themselves as a non-judgmental environment for anorexics to discuss their illness and support those choosing recovery, while others deny that anorexia nervosa is a mental illness and describe it instead as a lifestyle choice. Pro-ana sites often feature thinspiration, images or video montages of very slim people, sometimes celebrities, ranging from naturally slim to visibly emaciated; the scientific community recognizes anorexia nervosa as a serious illness, and some research suggests it has the highest mortality rate of any psychological disorder.
