Hedonophobia

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Hedonophobia is an excessive fear of or aversion to obtaining pleasure, formally defined as the fear of experiencing pleasure, from the Greek hedone, pleasure, and phobia, fear. People with hedonophobia have difficulty enjoying pleasurable experiences and often feel a persistent guilt about feeling pleasure, which can stem from a religious upbringing that propounds asceticism, a cultural background that eschews pleasurable pursuits as frivolous, or a recurring belief that good feelings are undeserved or too good to be true; symptoms can include high anxiety and panic attacks triggered by anticipating pleasure. Cognitive behavioral therapy is described as an effective approach to resolving the past beliefs underlying the condition.
