Princess Sickness

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Princess sickness, also called princess complex or princess syndrome, is a neologism used colloquially in parts of East Asia as a derogatory label for individuals, most often women, perceived as exhibiting entitled, dependent, or materialistic behavior, or as expecting preferential treatment in relationships; a comparable and less common term, prince sickness, is sometimes applied to men. It is not a recognized medical or psychological diagnosis and is used informally in popular media and everyday speech, and commentators and researchers have linked the spread of the term to social and economic changes in East Asia, including rising living standards, consumer culture, and shifting family dynamics during periods of rapid economic growth.
