Pyrophobia is a fear of fire that can be considered irrational if it goes beyond what is considered a normal reaction. The fear is ancient and primordial, perhaps dating to humanity's own discovery of fire, and pertains to humans' comprehensible reaction to fire itself; a fear reaction to fire in other animals is not considered pyrophobic, since they are thought not to understand its purpose beyond a general sense of danger.
